Description
The subject of this fine art black and white architectural photograph is the AMP Centre building on Bridge Street in the Circular Quay district of the Sydney central business district, Australia. The building was designed by architect Peddle Thorp and Walker and was built in 1976. The building itself flirts with the clash of textures common of the time through the modernist and brutalist movements and is somewhat evident in the sleek glass and concrete pylon structures on its exterior. At 188m tall it stood as one of Sydney's tallest buildings for a short period. This exterior will be redeveloped in the coming years as Sydney City goes through a revamp of its skyline, meaning this image may well become archival in nature in the near future.
The photograph was captured using long exposure and converted to high contrast black and white through a combination of techniques. The lens was fitted with a neutral density filter to allow me to keep the shutter open for a longer period of time during lighter conditions. This helped to achieve the effect of the sharpness and solidity of the building against the backdrop of the silky smooth clouds.
