8th Fighter Group 1st Lt. Frederick Ploetz
P-40F Warhawk
1st. Lieutenant Frederick Ploetz served with the 68th Fighter Squadron, 8th Fighter Group in the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII. P-39 Aircobras and P-40 Warhawks from the 68th Fighter Squadron had been flying patrols in the Tongan Islands before relocating to Guadalcanal.
During a specific air mission to the Shortland Islands in January 1943, 1st. Ploetz attacked and shot down a Japanese A6M Zero Fighter while on patrol. Though his own aircraft was stuck by an enemy shell, shrapnel from which injured him in the shoulder, 1st Lt. Ploetz safely brought his plane back to the airfield at Guadalcanal.
This fine art print includes an aged background designed from an actual World War II military map. A timeless design for any decor!
