Description
Longhorn Steer Stare - A majestic longhorn steer giving me the stare in the Texas hill country in late afternoon in a vertical format. Longhorn cattle are known for their hardiness and mostly calm temperment even though we have come across a few more aggressive cattle in our searches for them. I am always in awe of their masses horns, many can be up to ten feet long from tip to tip. The longhorn can also come in many colors and patterns this one was brown and white in different shades and patterns. Longhorns came in with from Spain with Christopher Columbus back in the 1494 to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. From there they actually came to the US via Mexicos. During the 1920's the longhorn was almost extinct. A novel written by J. Frank Dobie about longhorns actually help to save the species! In his book on longhorn Dobie writes that stories that romantize the breed like during thunderstorms the cowboys would sing lullibys so the cattle would not stampede. After the civil war sales to ranchers help bring Texas out of the economic depression. You can find longhorns in the Texas hill country, where many keep them more for tax exemptions or sale just the calfs. Some do sell them for meat and skins and their horns.
