For the Blackfeet, the tipi was central part of their spiritual life. It was grounded on earth yet drawn up towards the sky through the smoke hole and so it connected both Earth an Sky. The buffalo skins were painted with the animals and elements they honored; buffalo, bear, birds as well as sun and moon. Dreams and visions were central to their lives as they are to most artists and so this image is dream-inspired. The horse has many meanings in the various North American tribes; freedom and mobility, strength and power as well as loyalty and devotion. I tried to bring my own spiritual connections and dream-inspired images to this piece.
