New Social Media Platforms-where To Next

We all promote our work thru Social media. We I hope we all do.

I always say..choose one and stick with it..get good at it and embrace that platform..Some work, some dont. I failed at FB, Pinterest was meh, Instagram was not my cup of tea, twitter worked for me..

I its time to switch it up and move to a new platform. Twitter seems to be imploding and dont think the others are that great.

I am looking for something different and would appreciate any suggestions cause its time for a change. Time to adapt to the changes coming..

I have a list of 12 of them here. https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/twitter-alternative-social-networks/

Read through them, and see what you like. I'm looking for somewhere too in case twitter starts charging a monthly fee.

I think social media is a very tricky thing. It depends on you and how you use it, or if you even connect with the culture on a particular SM site. What works for one of us may not work for the next. It's probably best to just experiment and see which one works for you. See if any of them really grab you once you start using them, that will be the one.

Well...that will be the one assuming that buyers are there!

I'm not a fan of the "alternative" SM sites. I think we really need to target where the masses are.

Thanks for the list Lois. I read a little about Mastodon, but not the others...

Twitter was easy cause I set it up to auto tweet...

I'm gonna have to do a lot of research on this I see...

Don't forget LinkedIn

Mostly Facebook and Twitter for me. LinkedIn also. I have no idea what works for me?

Even though I find it next to impossible to pickup new followers there, Facebook is still king. You can make posts as long as you like, post any media types, create a personal fan page, have a custom shop. Nothing else is doing all of that for small business right now. The whole Meta Business Suite is very nice.

I have been enjoying Mastodon, though I don't think it's a great place to generate sales. At least not yet.

Instagram kind of is what it is. I have a shop setup there via my Facebook profile, but it seems pretty useless. No one ever clicks on the shop items. I'm constantly blocking bot followers.

I'm keeping my Twitter account open. Mostly because I don't want any bad characters swooping in and taking my @, which I have on a lot of business material. Twitter has potential when it comes to setting up a shop, etc, but remains to be seen how Elon handles all of that. I don't see him adding any perks w/o a fee though.

It seems for selling many are moving to Mastodon or Tumblr. However, I always say social media is a waste of time without an email list. And your FAA premium membership includes one that I think is stellar, especially when starting out.

Thanks for all the feedback and opinions...

I am thinking Mastodon or Tumblr.

I loved twitter cause it was easy and have about 70 following, but Musk is a Turd and it is imploding quickly..I think another week and its gone. He will get a tax right off and be known as the only CEO to ruin a company in a month. Sad..

Can you set up etsy for fulfill thru FAA?

It seems like Tumblr and Mastodon might be one in the same in due time.

Mainly Twitter and some Facebook.
Social media that works best are those that are indexed by Google.

I've heard that mastodon is confusing to use. And it sounds like its set up into chatrooms? So like all artists would be in one place? I haven't tried it yet, the guy on buzzfeed found it confusing to use and a pain. Hard to get into some rooms. Kind of old fashioned.

There is another like twitter called Hive? They said its like twitter, with unfollows etc. This was the description I found:

Users of the app can also comment on content and explore posts shared under hashtags.
You can also share images and videos, GIFs, polls and have profile music.
The social media platform was created in 2019 and according to Hive Social’s website, it brings back ‘what you used to love about social media in a new way'.
According to app’s about us page, Hive Social’s founder ‘Raluca’ was ‘tired of the restrictions she faced on social platforms in which her posts were not seen by many friends and felt pressures of complicated algorithms’.
Unlike Elon Musk’s Twitter, Hive is not timeline-based and lets users follow a range of topic-based communities including Science, Tech, Cars, Music, Fashion, Pets, Crafts, Books, Travel, Gaming, Art and Food.
Hive Social was founded in 2019. Credit: Hive Social
Hive Social doesn’t have a customised algorithm like other social media apps and developers have instead opted for a chronological feed instead which does not sell adverts.

Haven't looked at that one either. Hoping one will be on top and i'll use that. Its not worth investing time in it until I know everyone moves to one or another. Otherwise few will be looking at it.

Thanks Mike,,,I will investigate HIVE...

I am on Mastodon now(two days),,also Vivalde(one day) dont think i need to be on more than one server though. which is basically the same thing..Its confusing at first but everyday I figure out a little more. Setting up profile was easy except for links to websites,,,It may be self explanatory for most, but I couldnt even figure out how to find some people on their...Now I do..and following was a challenge too at first. But,
I think Twitter has major problems and maybe its a good thing I am forced to go elsewhere for my SM...

What wierd about Mastodon is that there is not central Server or organization like twitter or FB or instagram or pinterest..its all a network(well thats how I see it) that are connected together, And those networks or servers talk to each other..It has potential to be larger than twitter or FB or any of them.....

I guess you will wait and see what happens with me? I read an article that NFT's are waning in popularity. And look at the price of bitcoin?

No Mike, artists aren't in a "chat room".

You can join different servers, and you can see just who's on that server, but you also see who's on ALL the servers. You also follow hashtags. #MastoArt is a good one to use.

So all artists already have followers from many different servers

To join choose ONE server. You're then in all but only sign into that one

Mike, it's basically like Twitter, but you get to choose which server you want to log into instead of logging into a massive server farm that's controlled solely by Twitter. Each Mastodon server is controlled by their own set of admins and has it' own domain. From there, the servers are inter-connected, just like every server in Twitter's server farm would be inter-connected. So, once you're in and setup, it's basically like Twitter, except the username thing can confuse people.

Things I like about Mastodon so far.

Far better engagement than Twitter.
More in depth bio setup. Multiple links that can be validated are allowed in your bio.
500 character post limit. Not 255.
You can edit your posts and it doesn't cost you $8. There's a novel idea. I am donating $3/ month to my server's patreon though. I want this to work.
No ads at all.

I haven't personally run into any stability issues yet. Some issues sharing video from time to time.

Good read on Mastodon's origins and founder.

The problem we have with all of the social media outlets - failure to share each others art or photographs. Don't matter how many likes you give it - if you are not willing to share others art - you will have few that even look at it more than once. I suppose it's because 'some' artist/photographers are afraid they will buy someone else's work and they might lose a sale.

Due to the recent changes at Twitter, I quit the platform. It was the only one I was using and it wasn't helping much. Then again, I'm wasn't actively promoting my work there so that's not suprising. I will look into Mastodon, although it's a little strange to name a social medial platform after an extinct animal.

There is another one called the POST which they say is the most twitter like. I didn't look at it at all. There are way too many to choose from.

They call tweets on mastodon - Toots. Which makes sense because its the sound a trunk makes... But its not the thing I thought of when I heard they were called toots.

The real 'social media' that always worked and never failed is email and newsletter.
Direct connection between buyer and seller, no middleman to monitor if buyer should see what you share or not.
