Another "equipment Question 27" Monitors

Looks like Amazon has a BUNCH of monitors on sale today, early Black Friday deals! Not sure what to look for other than the basics. Any suggestions? Under $200 would be good...and 27".....Now have an older HP Pavillion. maybe 3-4 years old and then an ASUS.....

If you want a good screen, get this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09TQZP9CL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

that's the one I have. I looked at a lot of screens.

These were the runner ups, but for one reason or another I rejected them:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09TQZP9CL/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_1?smid=A1LWLVW7UFEH76&th=1

don't know which are on sale, but I chose the dell, I forget exactly why, after all that research, it just left my head.

Mike,

Thanks! First one, over my budget, by twice! ASUS loks good! Still having issues with typing....

Originally i wanted something around $200, but then decided to splurge, partly because my other screen was that price. And partly because this is my main screen and its as close to 10 bit color I can get.

A few of those are around $200 though.

But that keyboard thing must be getting triggered when you type something else. I'd turn off all the handicap features.

Here are some deals on Dell monitors

Jessica,

Thanks! Any that you think are great deals for my needs?

What are your needs?

I needed a screen that could be viewed from different angles, that had a good color range, that didn't really reflect back, that could support higher resolutions and had a fairly easy menu system.

All screens will work for general use. I don't know if the one I got is on that list. The only thing I don't like is that the name of the screen is not on the front of the screen, and that the bezel is so thin that my camera mount sticks below the surface. And that there is no space to balance a toy on the rim.

Mike,

BASIC Photoshop stuff! Have 2-27" monitors now and like that setup. One is starting to flicker when I hold a key down, every few weeks, hasn't done it this week...

Rich

Mike Savad

First update your video card drivers. Flickering especially combined with whatever that f7 thing may be related. If it flickers on its own. Or in my case, simply goes black for no reason, then its the screen. But first find out what video drivers you have and update that first. It may be the only issue you have.

Then check the connection and poke it a bit to see if it has a short inside, it could just be the wire or a fouled connection.

Which ever is your better screen, make that the main one and get a lesser one for the secondary. All I need is a third one and it will look like a cockpit of a plane.

----Mike Savad

Also, if you do get a screen, make sure it comes with the cord you need, that it matches your card. Because mine didn't, I only had dvi ports along with hdmi and displayports, but I had to find the wire which I luckily had.

So either make sure it has the wire not all of them come with a wire. Then get the right wire, or you will annoy yourself when the plugs don't match.... But I would try the video drivers first.

Mike,

Thanks but not what I'm looking for, too big! I like my 2 27" screens, probably could go a tiny bit larger with each, 30', maybe. Looking for suggestions for a good model AND DEAL! Plenty of monitors on sale now. The vast majority of monitors sold are 27"....probably get one today, with high rankings and good Cyber Monday sales...

Rich

Rich Franco

Okay,

Let's get back to the basics!

HUNDREDS of monitors are on sale today, but what do I look for? What is the list of functions that I need/want that will get me a few years on this new monitor? MINIMUM/Ultimate. Will spend over my budget foir the right montior....

List:

1.?
2.?
3.?
4.?
5.?......etc.

THEN with that knowledge, I can start to look for a new monitor, but now, just confused and only can judge by the pricing/sale....

Rich

Rudy Umans

1- IPS
2- adjustments. Not all lower budget monitors have adequate height and tilt adjustments
3- Eye care. Some monitors have some sort of technology that doesn't make your eyes tired after a long day staring at the screen.
4- 2K resolution. Unless you do video, I find 2K resolution preferable over 4K for photography
5- light fall off. Don't know if they publicize that kind of specs, but some monitors have a significant light fall off in the corners and edges
6- No grey import

Rich Franco

Rudy,

Perfect! But like, what is "no grey import"....??? Do you prefer a Brand like Dell? Or does it matter at this level....
Rich

Rudy Umans

With no grey import I mean only get monitors that are imported through the official channels.

Some (on-line) retailers do their own import so they can sell it cheaper, but in that case you won't get any service in the U.S. from the manufactures on those items. If you have a warranty claim, you can only send it back to the retailer, who might either try to repair it themselves or send it back to the country where it came from. You can't even register your new monitor with the US branch of the manufacturer. They won't recognize the serial number

telling you this brings back memories to a big issue I had with HP in 1987, but we save that for another day

This advice recommends Size, Resolution, Color Gamut and more. They also recommend monitors.

Mike Savad

You are looking for:

ips
led, I think back lit is what's out now, I forget
as close to 10 bit as you can get.
Reflection free (some are glossy)

resolution is tough, my old screen is a 2k and its usable but the menus are tiny. This screen is a 4k, and everything was microscopic until I adjusted everything. Even now I have issues with how brush sizes look in photoshop. And all images look smaller because its 4k now.

Then after that a good warranty.

Gray market is imported and has no american warranty. I bought a phone that way, the only way to get it serviced was by send it to england or something. But it was cheaper.

And of course, make sure it has the plugs you need, and it matches your video card. Your card may only support DVI, but the screen may only have a display port and not work with anything else. That's super important.

I forgot to mention, it needs a media port or USB-C. HDMI is not adequate. You can't get 0 - 255 with HDMI

Patti Deters

I would suggest getting TWO of the same. Besides looking nicer on your desk, they both operate the same way and should last about the same amount of time before you have to do all the research all over again when the second one goes out. Good luck!

Rich Franco

Patti,

I agree!

"I like my 2 27" screens, probably could go a tiny bit larger with each, 30', maybe", but there are budgetary constraints.....One of the monitors is for my workspace and the MAIN one is my color space editing one, mostly the Photoshop stuff. The first one isn't as important as the color space one....

@Rich-
Ok I have not read anyone else's response. Not enough time. But when I was shopping for a monitor a while back, I looked for a few things.

1) Number and types of inputs. Ideally you get HDMI, DisplayPort, and now, USB-C/Thunderbolt.
2) Color Space. I want as much Adobe RGB coverage as possible. My BenQ covers 99% of AdobeRGB. This is normally where the cheaper monitors fall short.
3) Pixel resolution. Don't necessarily need 4k but I wanted more screen landscape than 1080p.

I went with the predecessor to the BenQ SW270C Photographer 27" 16:9 HDR IPS Monitor. Specs are mostly the same. Great monitor for less than $800.

Rich Franco

Rudy,

Ah, "grey market"....have a Nikon body story, but that's for another time...How NEW is this "USB-C" ? My built computer is about a year old, should it have that?

Douglas, GREAT LINK! Easy to read and understand, saving it for later posting here on discussions. Stuff like this:

"For photo editing, we’d recommend a minimum of 1920 x 1080 up to 24 inches. For a 27-inch (68 cm) screen, a minimum resolution of 2560 x 1440. For screens larger than 27 inches, consider a 4K resolution screen."

Rick, looks great, is this now about $600+? Don't see the exact one now...besides, a bit over my budget....maybe $300....ON SALE $300, maybe knocked down from $500 or something....

USB-C in a year old computer is fine. USB-C or Media port to USB-A 3x should work fine also. (there are adapters if needed)

a USB-C port looks like a little oval sort of. it has rounded corners. USB-A is a rectangle

You can use HDMI, but Media port or USB-C would be better. It shouldn't be a deal breaker though

btw 2560 x 1440 = 2K

If you can run to the price - Dell UltraSharp UP2720Q. I had an ageing 27" Eizo before it and the Dell is easily on a par with what Eizo are offering at a considerably lower price. Built in calibration and 100% AdobeRGB colour space coverage.

Rich Franco

Dave,

WOOF! Run to the price, I couldn't DRIVE to that price! LOL! Usually $2,000, but now, looks like ONLY $1624...YIKES! Could probably buy TWO desktop systems I'm using now for that investment.

I'm in this "camp" that believes that for this "market", online sales, the "tools" needed aren't top end, but just plain good, and adequate to create images for sale here and other POD's. I've never been a person to purchase stuff, because it's listed as the best, even when shooting for magazines like Rolling Stone or Travel and Leisure, good cameras, good lenses were fine for that. And that of course was FILM, so what was sent in to the editor, had to be right and not hope some "photoshop" would fix something about the image.

Same here. As I've had a good conversation with Rudy, unless I can SEE a difference, not just be TOLD there is a difference, not interested!

And again, my images serve a different a market than yours. YOUR images deserve to be hung in Galleries and mine....probably man-caves! LOL!

Thanks! Hope your sales are doing well...

to narrow down your search, I would only look at Dell and BenQ

Like the Dell MD272QP for $259.99 from B & H

Rich Franco

Rudy,

Thanks! HAD an HP, marked down from $300 to $169, and then no stock! Had basically what I have now, just newer....

The pressure is off now, Sales are gone and my monitor is no longer freezing up and green! I think it read some of my posts here and decided to act right!

I was having for a few weeks, issues with Photoshop/Bridge/RAW/Enhance. Did a bunch of stuff from Youtube, and even downloaded CCCleaner and the Photoshop issue is mostly fixed, intermittent now. But the monitor itself hasn't screwed up. Looking to spend a few hundred dollars to get the same basic monitor now, seems silly....

Glad you got it sorted out.

If you are looking for a great PC cleaner check out iolo System Mechanics. Better than Norton and definitely better than CCleaner

System mechanics was originally 20+ years ago developed for the government by a company whose name I can't remember. (ONE-something?). They are still around, but they sold the PC stuff to iolo. I have been using it for 20+ years also

Rudy,

DONE! ON SALE! $14.99!!! Installed and working. Ran CCCLeaner first then this and it found new issues after CCCleaner! How often do you run this?

IOLO is the company name...

Rich

Rudy Umans

Iolo bought it from the company whose name I can't remember

You can set it that most of it is done automatically in the background. Active care they call it, If you do it manually, i would say, once a month or so

Also, I wouldn't run both of them, System Mechanics is very safe to use. It errs at the side of cautions deleting stuff. Not sure about that with CCleaner
