Description
American Oystercatchers (Haematopus palliatus) have heavy red bills, yellow eyes, white wing stripes, red eye rings, and stocky shapes. The juveniles have a darker eye, brown scaling on the back, and darker bills. They may take about 2 or more months from hatching until being independent. American Oystercatchers are found on beaches, mudflats and shell bars having a coastal distribution in the United States and Mexico. They are large shore birds, each measuring about 17.5 inches in length and weighing about 1.4 pounds. Their preferred diet
is mostly saltwater bivalve mollusks (various species of clams, oysters, and mussels).
This photograph of an adult American Oystercatcher walking on the muddy shore with her chick was photographed at Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, in Absecon, New Jersey on 7-17-2013. I used a Nikon D7000 camera body and a Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 VR2 telephoto lens coupled with a Nikon TC1.7 to capture this image. Settings: 1/4000 sec, f/7.1, ISO 1000. There were more than a hundred siphons or ‘snorkels’ from clams or other mollusks in this image protruding through the water-covered sand, probably making foraging an easy task for the Oystercatchers to accomplish!
I am honored that my photograph was featured in the Fine Art America groups:
