Description
This year we left the lawn unmown for several weeks and let the seed heads form. The grasses grew almost one foot high. For a typical suburban lawn, I was amazed at the variety of grass! Blue hues, red hues, yellows, whites and pinks. A gentle breeze swaying through the grass is really quite pretty. Thankfully, our township did not penalize us for the transgression of an unmown lawn. This photograph is a composite of four separate photos capturing the variety of grasses.
A Story:
For countless generations, the four friends had lived in the same place; their roots ran deep; their offspring had spread far and wide. Harold, Sylvia, Phil and Ethel were inseparable. Sure, they endured the same vagaries of nature that all species endured – floods, drought, wind, freezing temperatures; and, of course, the changing of the seasons. Mostly, though, they hated Spring. While this should have been a time of great joy and celebration, it was when the most feared monster came to mow them down.
It's almost here, Harold announced sadly. When I give the command, you know what to do – crouch down and scrunch up, hide! Remember our battle song:
We are not afraid; we will prevail
Your methods will surely fail
We can withstand any attack
Because you know – we will be back
NOW! Harold screamed – HIDE!! They followed his instructions, briefly hugging, saying 'we'll see you in two weeks.'
