ONE OF MY SOLD IMAGES, AVAILABLE AGAIN
Mount Saint Elias, the second-highest mountain in both Canada and the United States, stands on the Yukon and Alaska border about 26 miles southwest of Mount Logan, the highest mountain in Canada. The Canadian side of Mount Saint Elias forms part of Kluane National Park and Reserve, while the U.S. side of the mountain is located within Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve.
At 18008 feet and growing by two inches each year, Mount Saint Elias marks the 16 mile wide entrance to Yakutat Bay, about 120 miles from Glacier Bay and a haven for mariners off Gulf Coast of Alaska. This region, with its looming mountains and sprawling glaciers, is considered one of the most beautiful places on earth.
If you are cruising in this part of the world, your day will likely include Disenchantment Bay, the ice-filled inlet at the head of Yakutat Bay, and Hubbard Glacier. This massive river of ice originates in the St. Elias Mountains of Kluane National Park in the Yukon of Canada. It flows for 76 miles before reaching its terminus, an ice cliff face that is six miles wide and extends deep into the waters of the Disenchantment Bay. Ships keep their distance (about a quarter of a mile) from Hubbard Glacier, for this is among the many advancing glaciers in this region. Calved ice from the pressures of the forward movement on the portion of the face beneath the water can throw off (and upward, into the bay) chunks of ice as large as a ten-story building.
