Description
"Reflection of the Big Dipper" by Jackson Pollock is a unique work of art created using layers of paint and dripped enamel. In 1947, Pollock began to experiment with unconventional materials such as sand, glass, nails, and bottle caps, which he added to his canvases. This radical approach to painting became the main theme of his work, and he found a distinctive place within the Abstract-Expressionist movement. The painting was exhibited at the Betty Parsons Gallery in 1948 along with 16 other works by Pollock, and received positive reviews. The technique of dripping paint on a large scale is a transitional step from his traditional handling of paint to his revolutionary style. The thousands of droplets of color scattered across the surface of the picture are said to have reminded Pollock of the clear night sky of Long Island.
"My painting does not come from the easel. I hardly ever stretch my canvas before painting. I prefer to tack the unstretched canvas to the hard wall or the floor. I need the resistance of a hard surface. On the floor I am more at ease. I feel nearer, more a part of the painting, since this way I can walk around it, work from the four sides and literally be in the painting. This is akin to the method of the Indian sand painters of the West." — Pollock
