Description
Lake Natron seen from space. View of Lake Natron, a soda lake in the African rift valley of Tanzania. The strange red color of the lake is due to various algae blooms and the unusual chemistry of the water. Whitish spots in part of the lake are drying soda beds. The southern (bottom) part of the lake has a different water flow pattern, and so appears clear of algae. The soda (sodium carbonate) of the lake comes from the carbonatite volcanoes of the region, notably Olengaura (northern end) and the still active Oldinyo Lengai (southern, bottom right). This image was taken by the crew of shuttle mission STS-55 on 3 May 1993.
