Description
Lake Natron, seen from space. Colored infrared image of Lake Natron, a soda lake in the African rift valley of Tanzania. The algae blooms normal seen as red are here shown as pale yellow, revealing more structure than previous visible light photos. The whitish spots of drying soda beds are also more evident. The soda (sodium carbonate) of the lake comes from the carbonatite volcanoes of the region (dark red color), notably Olengura (north, top center) and the still active Oldinyo Lengai (south, bottom right). This image was taken by the crew of shuttle mission STS-55 on 3 May 1993.
