Jackson Pollock's painting "Moby Dick" is inspired by the book of the same name by American writer Herman Melville. It is not clear if Pollock read the book, but he may have been influenced by it through high school education, the interest of his friends or the general popularity of Melville at the time. Pollock and Melville share similar themes and styles, such as feelings of paranoia, preoccupation with moody and tragic violence, and a preference for indefinite imagery. Pollock's painting mimics the oceanic rhythm through its forms, depicting fish and marine life but no white whale is visible.
