Description
Jackson Pollock, part of the New York School, was influenced in his early work by Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso and was inspired by the Surrealists' idea of the unconscious as the source of art. In the late 1930s, he started to incorporate imagery based on totemic or mythic figures, ideographic signs, and ritualistic events, which reflect the buried experiences and cultural memories of the psyche. One of Pollock's works, Moon Woman, was influenced by Picasso's Girl Before a Mirror and features a standing female figure with a backbone as a broad black line and a combination of frontal and profile views of the face to contrast the serene and public aspect of the self with the dark and interior. The subject of the moon woman was likely influenced by the interests of his friends William Baziotes and Robert Motherwell in the hallucinatory imagery of Charles Baudelaire and the French Symbolists, although it is possible that Pollock was directly inspired by the poem "Favors of the Moon."
